LO5: Task 1: Script Reflection Of Feedback

Recap of Assignment

For this assignment we were asked to produce a script that lasted roughly 5 minutes for The Games Corner. Presenting news from the week we were assigned (23/3-27/3) into the style of a TV news broadcast.

Recap Target Audience 

The target audience of our script are those interested in gaming news. Since this is for Sheffield live our target audience also covers ethnic minorities since Sheffield Live is a community radio station that supports this. Which means they are likely to be in the demographic of C2DE and have less disposalable income for thier lifestyle. It also may mean that the viewer owns one console (or handheld) so only a certain amount of news towards that console is relevant in the news; which is something to consider when researching.

However since gaming is a mainstream hobby our target audience has a wider range covering many demographics. Though a dedicated gaming news channel will be more likely followed by those who are dedicated to their hobby. This means that our script also needs to appeal to a mainstream audience and follow the style and conventions of those types of broadcast. Fitting into a demographic of ABC1 and will have a higher disposable income for thier lifestyle; they will probably own multiple console and have a above average income that allows them to dedicate their money to their hobby.

Our script covers our target audience by following the style and conventions of a news broadcast. We have followed this by having an introduction; which is a conventions of news broadcast.



We have also covered our target audience by presenting relevant gaming news of that week with depth and intrigue.



Another area that covers our target audience is a variety of gaming news which is also a style/convention of a TV news broadcast.




Have needs/ expectations been met for the client brief and target audience?

According to feedback our script met expectations. It was commented that overall it was well written and will the time slot suitably. It was also commented that the script works well and to a professional standard. Based on this I believe we have met that expectations and suitably fulfilled the brief and target audience.

Clients likes and dislikes.

Feedback said that they liked the "witty comment" written for the section covering 'The Witcher', which was supposedly well informed.

They also liked the duration and felt it was overall well written and fit for purpose. It was commented that it "works well and to a professional standard".

The client disliked the focus upon one specific host commenting "I have a lot to read...". It was then suggested that we "...swap over who talks...". Based on this we would equal distribute lines.
The client also disliked that it mainly focused on releases asking for more variety in content. It was suggested that we look at technology news, indie developers and new events.

Improvements

- Equally distribute content between the hosts
- More variety in content
- Missing abbreviations and directions 

The feedback presents important points. For example a variety (events, game dev news, technology, less heavy news; less focused on releases) of content is a common attribute found in TV broadcasts. If this is lacking this means the script does not follow conventions and will not appeal as directly as a industry standard script would towards the target audience.   

Missing abbreviations and directions are very important since if these are missing it does not specify how the script should be made are needed for the production crew to use. The same applies to scheduling if details such as that were missing production couldn't be carried out.

Relevant changes that need to made to the script.

Based on feedback it was suggested that the changes that need to made are issues with content distribution between the presenters and the content generally lacking in variety. Based on this we will equally distribute content and alter the content to be more varied.

Improvements

- Equally distribute content between the hosts.

I will carry this out by using a word count and swapping presenters names around as well as in places breaking up larger chunks of text to equally distribute the content. Which shall be prof-read at the end.

This is important because it means that the broadcast will not drag on and gives the presenters breaks that are necessary so they can prepare for the next line. Also changing the content keeps the audience interested by supplying lots of different content that appeals to them as the target audience.

- More variety in content

I will carry this out by researching content that differs from my current content. It was suggested that I look at events. So I shall cover this by looking into conventions specifying details like dates and location. 

These are important and will take place within the UK so it is relevant to the target audience. This also helps viewers to pick and choose which bits of information to take in. Which for those who are new to gaming will apply more given that Sheffield Lives target audience; its remit are aimed towards those for an ethnic minority and may have recently purchased a console. So they would be unfamiliar and a variety of content would help the viewer to settle into the show. Content also since the broadcast happens at mid-day needs to be suitable for pre-watershed and filter out any inappropriate content such as ingameplay blood or swearing.

- Missing abbreviations and directions 

I will carry this out by capitalising the abbreviations that were not before and using industry standard abbreviations that would be understood by a production crew for example "V.O".

This is important because it tells the production crew how to make the broadcast and directs them on camera angles shot types and even the set description and schedule time. 

Is the content of the product correct?

Based on feedback there were no issues with incorrect content. It was not commented at any point that the content is incorrect. However it was commented that is lacks variety which is a feature that professional script writer for TV news broadcasts would include. Therefore this is a area we need to improve.

Also large segments of text would not feature in a professional TV News script so this would be another 
improvement based on the style and content of the script.

Content such as the language used is correct. TV news broadcasts are formal and our script is written formally and with the purpose to inform. It does not contain any opinion only fact. Opinion maybe presented through quotes from game developers for example.

Our script follows a house style details such as the introduction and side notes are left justified. All speech is centre justified and camera angles, shot types and transitions are right justified. This is just like the scripts we analysed. The script is written entirely in courier which is an industry standard font. Our script follows the conventions of the script because of the layout. All speech is written in lower case and everything else is written in capital letters. The script follows the styles and conventions of a typical magazine show news script having various content (various news titles) talked about during the script.

Our script is to inform and is written formally presenting fact rather than opinion because of this our script is teacher to pupil.

In the above category I have listed all the improvements that need to be made. One of the most important ones been missing abbreviations and stage directions. This is need so that the script can be used to film and functions more like a shooting script.

LO4: Personal Response & Acting Upon Feedback

Based on the feedback we were given and issue came to light. The issue been that during the week we were assigned the news for that week was not varied. 

However since it is paramount that I act upon this feedback we have instead taken more recent news to ahcieve the variety that was asked of us in the feedback.

Part of the feedback was that the lines between the presenters were uneven. See below.


I have acted upon this feedback by assiging eqaul amounts of lines between them. See below.


Another area of feedback was that the script lacked variety. It was suggested that we look at gaming events. I have acted upon this feedback by adding gaming events to the script. To also add variety I intergrated sales on consoles and a game dev anniversary to have more varied news that doesnt focus on game releases. See below.

LO2: Task 5: Audience Profile

Joe is 15, he is currently in secondary school and loves video games he owns an Xbox 360 and PS4, his favourite video games include Skyrim and Halo. Joe spends most of his time playing video games and likes to watch video reviews and such on websites like IGN and Gamespot, we also takes an interest in the YouTube community and has subscribed to many different gaming related channels.

Joe likes dubstep and rock music. He and his friends listen to it together in their rooms and like to converse over the Skype and other social media. Joe often meets with his friends and go out on the town, they visit places like HMV and like fast food restaurants such as KFC and McDonalds. Joe fits within the demographic of ABC1 and has a high income from both his parents.
